You'll NEVER Do That!

I had a crazy goal after I graduated from high school.

A good friend of mine from Texas and I wanted to buy a Volkswagen Van, paint it with chalkboard paint, and travel around the country selling our artwork. It was a lofty goal, but we were determined to make it happen. We told everyone and anyone about our dream.

One of our friends didn't believe in us, though. I remember sitting in a Taco Bell outside of Fort Worth, Texas, with our group of high school buddies explaining what we were planning. As we were getting more and more amped talking about the vision, one of the guys interrupted and said, "cool idea, but you'll never do that.

At the time, those words hurt. Who was this guy to tell us what we would and wouldn't do? What kind of friend was he if he didn't even believe in us enough to give us a shot? Looking back, though, its exactly what we needed to fuel our drive. We were determined to do something unique. We couldn't let his statement deter us.

As an entrepreneur and marketer, I have come to love those four words.

"You'll never do that."

When I hear someone say that to me, it tells me I'm doing the right thing. It tells me I am working on something others haven't thought of or are too scared to try.

When it comes to marketing a brand, product, or service, if you aren't doing something different, then you'll get lost in the noise. Great people, businesses, and stories got to where they are not by being like everyone else, but by doing things, others never dared to try.

Next time you hear someone say, "you'll never do that", tell them thank you and then go make it happen. It may not always work out, but the more you seek out those unique opportunities, the more you will increase your chances of creating a one of a kind story others will want to hear.
